BYU engineers and scientists take on global health threat

The National Institutes of Health want a faster and better way to detect drug-resistant blood infections, and they've turned to a team of professors at BYU to do it. The team includes electrical engineering professor and principal investigator Aaron Hawkins and chemical engineering professor William Pitt.

The latest research on this new technology appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Chemical engineering professor inducted into BYU Hall of Fame

John Hedengren, an assistant professor in chemical engineering, will be inducted into the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame in the class of 2015 for his achievements in cross country and track. As a student, he was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American an amazing five times — more than any athlete in BYU history.

Mary Lou Fulton

Mary Lou Fulton, generous supporter and friend to Brigham Young University and wife of Ira A. Fulton, the college's namesake, passed away Oct. 1 at age 82.

"We are saddened by the loss of Mary Lou Fulton,” said Dean Alan Parkinson. "The Fultons have contributed immeasurably to BYU and to this college. They were sweethearts for 61 years. We express our love and support to Ira and his family at this time."

ACET mentoring events Nov. 5 & 6 for juniors and seniors

Students in the Ira A. Fulton College will have the opportunity to be mentored by successful professionals as part of the college's Advancement Council for Engineering and Technology (ACET) conference November 5 and 6.

BYU students recognized for exceptional woodturning

Five BYU students from the School of Technology were recently recognized for exceptional work done on the wood lathe. In July, the American Association of Woodturners sponsored a national juried student woodturning exhibition “Turning To The Future”. BYU Industrial designer Carrie Etherington won first place in the post-secondary division.

BYU technology tackles climate change by freezing carbon

This August, President Obama announced an ambitious plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 32 percent by 2030. BYU chemical engineering professor Larry Baxter has created a system that separates carbon dioxide from other gases (and prevents it from escaping into the air) by freezing it. 

Chemical engineering student publishes four times as an undergraduate

BYU students who conduct research as undergraduates often become authors on peer-reviewed academic papers. This week, Anthony Bennett, a senior in chemical engineering, became a published author for the fourth time. His latest work (under the direction of professor Brad Bundy) on “just-add-water therapeutics” appears in an academic article in Biotechnology Journal.

Students: Prep for STEM Career Fair this week

A record-setting 180 companies will be on campus for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Career Fair on Thursday, Sept. 24, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the WSC Ballroom and Garden Court. All Ira A. Fulton College students are encouraged to get prepared to attend by downloading the new BYU Career Fair Plus app. 

Fulbright Scholar uses new design perspective to help developing world

Mattson went to the Loughborough Design School to absorb a non-engineering perspective on design.

Christopher Mattson, BYU mechanical engineering professor, spent the last year in the United Kingdom studying design as a Fulbright Scholar. There he teamed up with world leaders in sustainability design to help get new technologies into developing countries in a lasting and impactful way. 

Facility and property management student wins national essay contest

Andrew Steele, a senior facility and property management major, won a national competition with his essay titled “Educating the Property Managers of Tomorrow.” The competition was sponsored jointly by the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) and the IREM Foundation.
