Ira A. Fulton College student takes third place at university Three Minute Thesis Competition

On March 9, 11 BYU graduate students competed in the university-wide Three Minute Thesis competition (3MT). Competitors were required to present their theses within three minutes, and were judged on comprehension, engagement and communication. Mechanical engineering graduate student Jared Butler won third place and $1,500 in prize money.

On Thursday, March 2 Gary Cohen, executive vice president and president of Global Health and Development at Becton, Dickinson & Co, spoke to students and faculty about BD Medical’s business methods for positive global impact.

BYU to host seventh annual Student Innovator of the Year competition

BYU’s seventh annual Student Innovator of the Year (SIOY) competition will be Thursday, March 9 and Wednesday, March 15.

Approximately 35 teams of student innovators will compete for $13,000 in prize money. On March 9, these teams will present their innovations to the public at the product showcase, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Brigham Square.

Entries will be judged at the product showcase on criteria such as potential market size, originality or innovation and engineering analysis. Judges will choose the top seven competitors to move on to the final event.

BYU using virtual reality to develop aerospace and defense solutions

Researchers at BYU and Lockheed Martin have decided to take rapidly advancing virtual reality gaming technology and use it for something a bit more practical: engineering. Lockheed Martin has awarded a grant to the BYU Department of Mechanical Engineering to develop aspects of a virtual reality training system that will advance Lockheed’s digital engineering training.

Students take three minutes to win thesis competition

The college’s annual Three Minute Thesis competition was February 15. Three finalists were chosen, and the first place winner, Jared Butler, will compete in the university-wide competition on Thursday, March 9. 

BYU engineers built a bulletproof origami shield to protect law enforcement

BYU engineers have created an origami-inspired, lightweight bulletproof shield that can protect law enforcement from gunfire.

BYU students have joined forces with a local neonatologist, hospital director, and company to create a device to help premature babies breathe properly after birth. The team plans to send a trial run of 10 devices to Cambodia this summer.

On Friday, February 3, Thomas Gadberry of Qualtrics' talent acquisition and employee relations team, and Bridget Reichenbach, corporate recruiter at Qualtrics, addressed BYU students on how they can best prepare and navigate career fairs, at the Career Fair 101 workshop.
