Alum uses communications skills she learned at BYU to excel in her career

After graduating in April, industrial designer Janae Pettit landed a job at Vivint Smart Home's Innovation Center. Her time at BYU gave her real-world experience and taught her communication skills that have been critical to her career. 

BYU to host third annual Girls Cybersecurity Camp

Women are sorely outnumbered in the information technology industry.  Dale Rowe, BYU associate professor of information technology, hopes to start to bridge that gap with the Girls Cybersecurity Camp on July 17-21. The free camp is exclusively for girls ages 13-18 to get them interested in both IT and cybersecurity.

Civil engineering chair receives significant honor from professional society

Rollin H. Hotchkiss, BYU professor and chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, received the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) 2017 Hydraulic Structures Medal. The medal is awarded for significant contributions to the advancement of the art and science of hydraulic engineering as applied to hydraulic structures.

BYU Mars Rover team finishes 4th in international robotics competition

Competing with elite teams from 13 countries, BYU engineers returned from "Mars" with a fourth place finish in the University Rover Challenge. Sponsored by The Mars Society, the rover challenge is considered one of the most difficult robotic competitions for students because vehicles must be autonomous and capable of completing various tasks in extremely rugged environments. 
 

WE@BYU mentorship opens up new opportunities

A lot of opportunities opened up for Lutz because of her WE@BYU mentorship.
During her mentorship, Lutz was able to travel to an international interior design show to sell lamp shades she created.

Hannah Lutz started studying industrial design as a way to combine her love for art and the ability to invent things. After being accepted into the major, she applied for a Women in Engineering and Technology mentorship, which has opened up new opportunities for her and has helped her become more involved in the School of Technology.

CFM professor introduces new construction methods to the Dominican Republic

BYU construction and facilities management professor Brian Capt could change the way construction operates in the Dominican Republic. For the past eight years, he has travelled there annually and has introduced and taught the people of the Dominican Republic about new ways of construction.

Universe: BYU alum sees benefits from industrial design education

BYU alumnus Cory McArthur completed his junior project back in 2015 but is still seeing benefits. One of his ideas has been mass-marketed and is now available for sale at a major retailer.

PhD student receives NASA Space Technology Research Fellowship

Nathan Pehrson, a PhD student studying mechanical engineering, recently received the NASA Space Technology Research Fellowship (NSTRF). Pehrson was awarded over $60,000 for the fellowship and will begin in August, while still working to finish his PhD.
