Cabinets
Do’s and Don’t in planning your kitchen.
Things you should do include:
• Check the height of your oven if it is to be built
into an oven cabinet.
• Check to make sure that your appliance doors can be
opened without crowding an adjacent or opposing cabinet.
• Leave counter space near a built-in oven.
• Leave counter space near your refrigerator,
preferably on the open door side.
• Check your dishwasher door opening and range door
opening in an L- or U-shape kitchen, so they don't bump into the
handles of adjacent cabinets.
• Allowing for storage of utensils near the stove,
sink or mixing area.
• Check your refrigerator door opening to make sure
that it opens in the correct direction.
• Allow space for a microwave oven.
• Provide space for future appliance additions such
as a mixers, trash compactor or a larger refrigerator.
These are things you should not do:
• Don't locate a range and an oven together without
counter space in-between.
• Don't locate a sink too close to a range.
• Don't forget to provide for adequate lighting in
your kitchen.
• Don't forget to provide for the duct work for the
kitchen vent hood (or use a ductless vent hood.)
• Don't forget to see if cabinet doors can swing open
in corners. Fillers may be necessary.
• Because of the many variations in kitchen design,
it is impossible to anticipate all the problems that you may encounter.
The help of your cabinet dealer will be invaluable in avoiding the
pitfalls in kitchen design.
