Seven finalists competed in the SIOY competition and Piero has been named 2018 Student Innovator of the Year! Piero won $6,000 for their efforts to make the lives of wheelchair users easier. They created Portal, a hands-free device that automatically opens doors when a wheelchair user with their app approaches the door.

Humanitarian and engineer, Bishnu Adhikari spoke at the college lecture series, addressing engineering and technology students in the JSB auditorium on March 15. He talked about engineering challenges he has faced and continues to face out in the world, and how he worked to overcome those challenges.

BYU students compete in national cyber security competition

A team of information technology students with experience in cyber analytics is participating in a national cyber competition, the final phase of which will take place on April 12 and 13. The National Cyber Analyst Challenge and Conference (NCAC) supports the nation’s best students pursuing cyber-related degrees by holding a three-phase competition focused on cyber defense, risk analysis, threat identification, remediation, and communication.

Julie Crockett, associate professor of mechanical engineering, gave the devotional address in the Marriott Center on March 6. She spoke about how striving for perfection, to become more like Christ, doesn't mean losing our individuality; rather, it means enhancing it.

BYU professor receives lifetime achievement award

Earning the Wallace Hayward Baker Award was a culmination of a lifetime of "ingenious innovation in the field of ground modification" for Professor Kyle Rollins, who has worked for years on developing solutions to tricky problems in the field of geotechnical engineering.

BYU innovation hit a high note at the annual college 3MT competition when graduate students presented their thesis work to a panel of judges. The wide array of ideas presented varied from a drone system that provides accessible internet worldwide to super strong steel and a radiation resistant organism.

Construction Management students and faculty shine at national conference

Brian Capt, associate teaching professor of construction and facilities management, received the Outstanding Educator Award for 4-year schools at the 2018 National Association of Home Builders conference in Orlando, FL. The BYU Construction Management team won third place in the show category in the student competition.

BYU professor receives rare distinction for second time

Michael Scott, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, has once again received the distinction of being named a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher for 2017. To earn this distinction, researchers have to publish the largest number of articles selected as highly cited papers.
