From protein biocatalysts to pork: Dr. Bundy’s million-dollar research

Student researchers

Dr. Bundy and student researchers Mark Smith, Chris Huchings and Jeff Wu. Amino acids, like LEGOs, are building blocks.

A Brigham Young University chemical engineering professor was recently awarded $975,000 in research funding. Dr. Brad Bundy had three prestigious accomplishments this month; he was awarded the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, the DARPA Young Faculty Award and a research grant from the National Pork Board.

BYU Manufacturing Engineering Technology professor Michael Miles' discovery of "friction bit joining" will allow manufacturers to create a strong bond between lightweight aluminum and ultra-high-strength steel. This breakthrough could be a game-changer for the automotive industry.

Design your world, design your life

Diagram - technological world around us

We are surrounded by a "technological world" created by design engineering.

Dr. Magleby with iPhone

Phones are part of our technological world.

Associate Dean Spencer Magleby spoke at the University forum on Thursday. His topic, “Designing Your World,” discussed both how engineers design our technological world and how individuals can use the same process to design their lives.

Two BYU mechanical engineers selected for NASA grants

NASA has selected Thomas Hardin and Ezekiel Merriam to receive research grants. The NASA Space Technology Research Fellowship funds projects that have space applications.

BYU's ChemE Car wins first place

BYU’s chemical engineering team won the regional ChemE Car Competition organized by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

Daniel Maynes named as new chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department

Daniel R. Maynes has been named as the new Department Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department. He replaces Timothy W. McLain, who served as the Chair for six years.

Cavitation: the party trick with engineering applications

Dr. Tadd Truscott of the BYU Splash Lab recently published a paper on the destructive power of cavitation bubbles. This idea, which can be seen in the “bottle smashing” party trick, could have application as an underwater cutting tool and other cavitation-based technologies.

Driving 1,000 miles on a single gallon of gas

The supermileage vehicle may be BYU's slowest racecar, but it also gets over 1,000 miles per gallon. The team of engineering students that designed it are hoping to reach at least 1,500 MPG at the SAE Supermileage Competition this week.
