Upper atmosphere (> 5 miles) data do not show the same magnitude of warming as surface data.  The figure below shows the difference between recent measured temperatures and the historical average in the atmosphere above 5 miles.  Compare with the earth's surface temperature measurements.  Source: National Research Council/National Academy of Sciences/New York Times
